Unlike Bangkok, whose canals have been gradually filled in and replaced by avenues, Thonburi has retained its network of khlong lined with old houses on stilts. This area can be explored by boat, stopping off to visit the various temples and floating markets, where traders sit in boats laden with fruit and vegetables. Daily life here has a tranquil feel which is a million miles away from the frenetic pace of Bangkok, although modern construction is starting to encroach on the old city.
