Chiang Khan
The Essential
Situated on the banks of the River Mekong, in a valley framed by majestic mountains, Chiang Khan is a charming base for a short stay, with traditional wooden houses lining two large streets running parallel to the river. Here and there, you'll come across several teak temples; these fine examples of Lao architecture are adorned with painted shutters and "Romanesque" colonnades showing French influence, resulting from the proximity of former Indochina. The Wat Mahathat, the oldest temple in the town, boasts a 17C ubosot. The garden of the 19C Wat Pa Klang is the setting for an imposing white Buddha.
