Situated close to the Burmese border, Mae Hong Son occupies a pleasant mountain setting in the middle of an area occupied by the Shan people. The turbulent rivers in the region, the power of which can vary considerably from one season to the next, will delight white-water enthusiasts. As an antidote to this, the calm waters of the lake in the centre of town encourage a more dream-like atmosphere, enhanced by the three delightful temples close to it. The town's markets are teeming with agricultural produce (poppies are not the only thing grown here!) and arts and crafts. This attractive town has the additional bonus of being accessible by plane from Chiang Mai.
