The gateway to the Fergana Valley, Kokand is the capital of the former khanate (kingdom) that rivalled the Khanate of Bukhara. Caught up in the expansionist whims of Russia, China and Bukhara, it fell in the second half of the 19C. The political and religious power of the khanate was such that the Russians had to fight into the 1920s to secure control of it. Beyond the khan's palace, the city has retained several madrasas (schools) and mosques from its prestigious past, which are well worth taking the time to visit.
