Samarkand
The Essential
Highly recommended
Few cities have names as evocative as that of Samarkand. The city that Tamerlane wished to make the most beautiful on earth is infused with all the fascination of the Silk Road. Despite decades of Russian then Soviet occupation, and despite untold levels of destruction, here you can still discover the most grandiose monuments in the country. The turquoise cupolas and domes have lost none of their magic and the minarets remain enduring landmarks at the edge of the Kyzyl Kum desert.
