Afrasiab Museum of Samarkand

The greater part of this museum is taken up with photographs of the main archaeological finds from the site of Afrasiab. A rather more fascinating artefact lies in the museum's basement: a fresco dating from the 7C and discovered by chance in 1965. The impressive proportions of the fresco, which once adorned a now-vanished royal residence, are surpassed only by the wealth of detail. On it you can see King Varkhuman receiving the Turkish and Chinese ambassadors.
