The "City of Stone", once a stop on the Silk Road, was almost completely wiped off the face of the earth in the earthquake of 1966. The Uzbek capital is largely defined by its 1970s Soviet architecture, but a few districts, particularly around Chorsu Bazaar, have retained all of their original character: their mazes of little streets lined with houses made of rammed earth contrast with the wide boulevards of the modern districts. The Uzbek capital is also home to some of the country's finest museums.
