Dien Bien Phu Cemetery

It is here, to the south of the town, that some of the 15 000 Viet Minh soldiers who were killed during the attack are buried. Construction of the cemetery was financed by France. Along the walls, bas-reliefs depict the story of the battle, emphasising the acts of bravery which figure in Vietnam's history books, such as the assault of Be Van Dan, gun at his shoulder, and the sacrifice of Phanh Dinh Giet, who threw himself in front of French artillery fire to protect his men.
