Lang Son
The Essential
Interesting
Partially destroyed during the conflict between China and Vietnam in 1979, the town has since experienced an economic boom, initially thanks to smuggling and then the re-opening of the border. Although the town itself is ugly, it is surrounded by a pretty landscape of limestone peaks. It has also preserved a handful of colonial buildings and an interesting pagoda, the Pagoda of the Immortals. It's also worth taking some time to browse the town's two markets with their attractive stalls of Chinese knick-knacks.
