If ever there were a mountain village that gave the impression of remoteness and solitude, it's certainly Iruya, which you come to beyond the Abra del Condor, a pass at an altitude of 4 000m. The village itself (its central part at least) seems to have been frozen in time for centuries, with its steep cobbled streets and adobe houses. The lovely excursions in the surrounding area include a trip to the hamlet of San Isidro, which gives you the chance to see a remote community in a stunning landscape.
