A cultural melting pot, with a unique energy and a friendly feel, Salvador is a colonial gem. Its historical centre, a Unesco World Heritage Site, harks back to its origins. Bahia's cuisine, candomblé ceremonies, the rhythms of percussion and the sparring of capoeira are a constant reminder of the subtle mix of African and Portuguese cultures at play here and especially evident in the Pelourinho area. Outside the city, the islands off the bay are appealing destinations.
