The richest agglomeration of the Northeast Region of Brazil, founded by the Dutch, is also the most European. Its historic centre, linked by some fifty bridges, is rich in Belle Époque facades and Baroque churches. To the south of the Rio Pina, a forest of skyscrapers reveals the other face of the city, Boa Viagem and its 7km-long sandy beach. A mixture of modernism, tolerance and tradition, Recife is a marvellous blend of carnival rituals and contemporary art.
