A jewel from colonial times, Paraty has preserved its architecture so well that it often provides the backdrop for historical films. The other attraction of Paraty is without doubt its bay with its truncated sides and its countless islands with idyllic beaches that can be explored by boat. Isolated for many decades, the town remained as it was at the end of the 19C. The opening of a road linking Rio and São Paulo provided the catalyst for the growth of tourism here.
