Ancud, to the north, lost its status as capital of the Isla Grande de Chiloé, although it has retained its attractive jumble of colourful wooden houses. Admire also the charming square with its cathedral, and the remains of the San Antonio fort, the last refuge of the Spanish during the War of Independence.
