The Essential
Just 6km from the Pacific Ocean, Guapi was founded in 1772. This fishing village saw its population increase in spectacular fashion when goldfields were discovered nearby. Its artisans make finely hand-woven items, gold jewellery and musical instruments. Currulao, music combining African accents with European influences, is played and danced to everywhere, to the sound of the marimbas (wooden xylophones) and drums.
