Norte de Santander
For safety reasons, tourists are advised to avoid this region. The capital of Norte de Santander is situated 16km from the Venezuelan border. The sprawling development of Cúcuta is the result of rapid growth that began in the 1960s. A major commercial hub, this "city without borders" is home to a population that is half-Venezuelan and half-Colombian. The ubiquity of parks and trees helps to alleviate the effects of the heat. Most of these green spaces were laid out following the earthquake that devastated the city in 1875.
