The Essential
You pass by when visiting the Zona Cafetera, but you don't linger. Despite its nickname "Pearl of the Río Otún", the capital of the Risaralda departmento and largest city in the Coffee Triangle is distinctly lacking in appeal. Founded recently (1863), it has retained few historical buildings, and the reconstructions that followed the devasting earthquake of 1999 have turned it into a graceless patchwork of architectural styles.
