Costa Rica
The Essential

In the heart of central America, between the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean, Costa Rica stands out as an ecological sanctuary overflowing with energy.
You will be faced with an almost bewildering choice of means of transport to explore the island: 4WD, kayak, taxi-boat, raft, dug-out canoe, horseback or even flying over the forest hanging from a Tyrolean rope contraption? Adventure awaits the traveller on the Río Sarapiquí, bringing a foretaste of the Amazon, in the huge plains of Guanacaste, worthy of a Western movie set dotted with haciendas and on the tracks and paths of the Corcovado, home to phenomenal wildlife. Your journey continues into the sweltering heat of the tropical forest whose slopes are carpeted in the coffee plantations of the Valle Central, to the foot of the active Irazú volcano, whichyou can observe on leaving San José, the capital and heart of Costa Rican culture.
The coast is equally rich in pleasant surprises! Relax on paradisiac beaches of the likes of playa Manuel Antonio on the Pacific seaboard; go surfing off the Nicoya peninsula; diving in the coral reefs of Punta Uva or observe the turtles come to nest in Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast. You may also be delighted to learn that eco-tourism is gaining a firm foothold in the superb natural landscapes of Costa Rica.
