Higüey
The Essential
Interesting
Higüey derives its income from farming and cattle, but owes its reputation to Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, the country's patron saint, fervently worshipped by many Dominicans. Sheltered in the basilica in the heart of the town, every January 21, the statue of the Virgin Mary attracts pilgrims from all over the country who pay homage to her during processions and services. As you can imagine, Higüey and to a lesser extent, the province of Altagracia, of which it is the capital, are well-nigh impractical at this period, when it is best to seek refuge along the Coconut Coast.
