Bonao is the capital of Monseñor Nouel province, and renowned for its carnival. It is a prosperous little town surrounded by rice paddies, orchards and meadows. The surrounding mountains offer plenty of outdoor activities. Bonao is an old town: its first fort was built in 1493 at the request of Christopher Columbus. Under Trujillo's dictatorship, Bonao belonged to the dictator's brother, who had installed his personal army here: los Cocuyos de la Cordillera.
