Basse-Terre

Basse-Terre
The Essential
While Pointe-à-Pitre is Guadeloupe's economic capital, Basse-Terre remains its historic (and indeed sentimental) capital. Endowed with a tranquil charm, the stones of its old houses languishing in the tropical heat exude nostalgia. Basse-Terre is the island's administrative capital and is embracing the modern age, but all around are evocations of its past, distinguished by the blending of Amerindian, African and European cultures, sometimes for the better, often for the worst.
