The main town on the island of Marie-Galante, Grand-Bourg is enlivened by the arrival of boats bringing visitors from Guadeloupe, here known as "the continent". At its heart, the church of Notre-Dame-de-Marie-Galante faces the landing stage. Despite countless hurricanes, it retains its early-19C neo-Classical façade. The Art Deco style town hall was built in 1931, in the wake of the 1928 hurricane. A market takes place here every morning.
