This town on the north coast of Basse-Terre is named after the black basalt rocks which come from the old Belle-Hôtesse volcano (777m). The town remained isolated until the construction of the road from Deshaies in 1957 and it has maintained its forestry traditions, with an expertise which is still alive and well. The town, with Creole-style houses dotted here and there, has sadly been spoilt by the addition of ugly modern buildings, but the lovely countryside and beaches in the surrounding area are charming.
