Terre-de-Bas is one of the most peaceful spots in the French Caribbean. No scooters, few tourists; it is the ideal place to enjoy nature and the beaches. Grande-Anse is the island's finest beach, its pale sand fringed by coconut trees. If spending a few days here, be sure to see Petites-Anses, seat of the local administration. The last remaining salako (a traditional 19C fishermen's hat) makers continue to craft this curious item of headgear using bamboo and checked fabric.
