Trois-Rivières

Trois-Rivières
The Essential
The south of Basse-Terre was a centre of Precolombian civilisation in the Antilles, as is evident from its numerous rock carvings. In 1640, the town was settled by colonists who established tobacco and cotton plantations, before diversifying into sugar cane, and later bananas in the 1940s. It was the backdrop for the earliest slave revolt, led by Jean-le-Blanc in 1656. Today it is a lively commercial centre; the tourist attractions lie out of town.
