Grand'Rivière, the northernmost village in Martinique, is reached by a winding road through the rainforest and two metal bridges. This village at the foot of Mt Pelée, sheltered from the wind, faces the island of Dominica. The village's fishermen are considered to be the most experienced on the island, despite the silting up of the port that is threatening their livelihood. It is possible to swim in the Grande Rivière - the river cutting across the village and after which it is named - and at the small black sandy beach.
