The Essential

Stretching along the Caribbean coast, the small town of Saint-Pierre boasts the finest harbour on the island, in the shadow of the killer volcano Mt Pelée. After its eruption on 8 May 1902, a terrible catastrophe, Saint-Pierre owed its salvation to the patient restoration undertaken by the Pierrotins, as of the 1920s. Nowadays, with its attractive yellow two-storey houses facing the sea, steep narrow streets and ashen ruins, it exudes a romantic and nostalgic charm that is truly unique.
