The fourth largest town in Martinique, Sainte-Marie is the oldest parish on the island, and was founded in 1658 by Dominican monks. Built in 1891, the current church - painted sky blue and with a basilica floorplan - overlooks the village's rooftops and the coconut trees. Opposite the town, the islet of Sainte-Marie is linked to the mainland by a tombolo, a 400m-long sandbank. Venture inland to see the banana and sugar cane plantations via minor roads (D 23, D 24bis and D 24) admiring countless views of the coast along the way.
