Puno is traditionally a stop-over town, either for a pause between Arequipa and Cuzco, to go to the islands of Lake Titicaca on the shores of which it stands, or to reach Bolivia, on the opposite bank. Some of the lanes in the centre lined with craft shops are however also worth a look, and if you are lucky enough to come here in early February, you will be able to witness the incredible Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria, rich in colour and music.
