Proudly perched above the main street, dotted with fine town houses, the Abbey of Melk dominates the Danube. Originally, the noble House of Babenberg established its residence here from the 10C, on the first stage on the road to Vienna, where it later established its court. In the late 11C, the family bequeathed the castle to the Benedictines, who turned it into a fortified monastery. At the foot of the huge abbey, the small town has no lack of restful pedestrian squares, ideal for aching feet.
