The Abbey of Melk, proudly perched on its hillock above the main street and its fine town houses, dominates the Danube. Originally, the noble House of Babenburg established its residence here, as of the 10C, the first stage on the road to Vienna, where it was to establish its court. In the late 11C, it ceded the castle to the Benedictines, who turned it into their fortified monastery. Their spiritual and intellectual influence would go on to reach all of Lower Austria.
