Like neighbouring squares, Residenzplatz (Residence Square) was built according to the Italian style that the lavish Wolf Dietrich liked so much. It is part of the great town-planning scheme under which the cathedral and prince-bishops' residence were built. At the centre, water from a great 17C fountain cascades down onto groups of horses, tritons and atlases. To the east, the Glockenspiel, a belfry with 35 bells, chimes every day at 7am, 11am and 6pm.
