The Essential
The houses of the upper town of Imst, whose fountains are embellished with antique statues, huddle round the 15C Parish Church of the Assumption (Maria Himmelfahrt). The church was remodelled in the Baroque style in the 18C, and although later damaged by a fire, it has preserved its Gothic portals and late-medieval frescoes. Its 84m-high belfry is the tallest in the Tyrol. Masks and costumes from the well-known Imst Carnival are displayed in the local museum.
