When to go
Vienna is well worth a trip, whatever the time of year. However, to make the most of the capital in relative peace and quiet, spring and autumn are your best options.
Short and mild, spring is ideal to wander around the streets and parks. Make a beeline for the Prater Giant Ferris wheel, which commands a fantastic view of the city.
The autumn weather is fine and dry. Schönbrunn Castle’s trees turn a riot of colour and the museums are gloriously empty.
Summer and winter are the two high seasons of the Austrian capital. The former is hot and attracts hordes of tourists who seek the refreshing waters of the Alte Donau lined by green lawns. The latter is very cold and snowy, but the magnificent Christmas markets and giant skating rink erected in front of the town hall incite many a visitor to defy the freezing cold!
