Bregenz draws a considerable tourist trade from its position on the shore of Lake Constance (or Bodensee). The Lower Town, huddled at the foot of the former fortified city, beckons visitors to stroll along its shaded quays to the passenger port. In the Upper Town, walkers can wander up to the Martinstor, a fortified gate, to take in the view of the Old Town, the lake and, in the distance, the Appenzell Alps. Between the lake and the mountains, the capital of Vorarlberg has lots of surprises in store for walkers.
