The spiritual heart of Flanders, the richest Flemish city with its flourishing port, and a major industrial centre, Ghent is also a dynamic and festive university city. At the confluence of the River Lys and the Scheldt River, it is criss-crossed by canals and waterways. Birthplace of Emperor Charles V, the city is steeped in history; its monuments, old districts and quayside areas exude a poetic atmosphere, best experienced when lit up after dark.
