This small, quiet and picturesque Flemish town was once a stronghold protected by powerful walls (14C and 17C), and a cloth-making centre. In 1678 and 1701 it was ransacked by Louis XIV's troops and its fortifications were demolished in the 18C. Since then, the town has lived with one eye on the past, huddled round its fine church.
