Genk, on the edge of the Kempen region, has retained its slag heaps and miners' houses. The closure of the huge Ford factory in late 2014 was a massive blow for the community, but this town in Limburg province is doing its best to move forward. Genk is worth visiting most notably for the superb Molenvijverpark - 15ha public gardens, and the C-Mine complex laid out around the former Winterslag mine, where the industrial heritage has been preserved and adapted.
