Maaseik
The Essential
Formerly an important river port that grew into a pleasant little town, Maaseik is well preserved, with its half-timbered houses, vestiges of its ramparts and its main square shaded by lime trees. Located right in the middle of the Meuse area, the birthplace of Hubert van Eyck, brother of the famous portraitist Jan van Eyck, honours Limburg's tradition of colourful carnivals. The knapkoek, a biscuit traditionally eaten by sailors, has a wonderful crunch.
