This small town on the Yser was a strategic point in the Battle of the Yser. Its name is bound up with the memory of the Belgian soldiers and French marines led by Admiral Ronarc'h, who put up heroic resistance against forces outnumbering them from 16 October to 10 November 1914. The town was completely rebuilt after the First World War.
