Veurne
The Essential
Interesting
Veurne's (in French: Furnes) monuments are grouped around a magnificent main square, where the wealth of Flemish decoration is tempered by a somewhat solemn and very Spanish dignity. Indeed, it was during the prosperous reign of Archidukes Albert and Isabella that most of the monuments were built. A stronghold in the 9C, Veurne was the headquarters of the Belgian army in 1914 at the time of the Battle of the Yser. Every July, the famous Penitents' Procession (Boeteprocessie) takes place.
