This fortress, built in 1462, was enlarged in the following century to resist the Turks, who had invaded neighbouring Herzegovina. Note the road which stretches out beyond the second bridge; it runs alongside old lazarets, a series of long rooms where travellers were made to stay during a quarantine period that was enforced through fear of epidemics. The eye is then drawn to the ridge that borders the hinterland.
