Panagia tis Asinou Church

Highly recommended
This is a very simple, remote chapel in the middle of the forest and yet a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. You have to step inside, through the heavy wooden door, to see why: the interior is decorated with some 100 paintings, created between the 11C and 14C. Byzantine sensitivity, visible in the Dormition of the Mother of God, for instance, goes hand in hand with the pomp of the Constantinople court: the donor has had himself portrayed in ceremonial dress, sumptuous clothes and soft leather slippers.
