The city of Kutná Hora owes its wealth to its extremely profitable silver deposits. In the Middle Ages it was one of the largest and most active towns in Bohemia, capable of launching the construction of St Barbara's Cathedral, one of the country's Gothic architectural wonders. The discovery of richer seams in Jáchymov signalled its decline. But many vestiges of its past splendour have survived, earning Kutná Hora a place on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
