Jelling nestles in a charming landscape of lakes surrounded by wooded hills. Its status as a major tourist centre can be attributed to the events that took place here in the 10C. At the height of the Viking period, during the reigns of the founders of the Danish dynasty (Gorm the Old and his son Harald Bluetooth), this was the seat of the royal family, as shown by the two impressive burial mounds and two rune stones: the UNESCO-listed Jelling Stones. A suggestion: start by visiting the Royal Museum.
