This busy port is one of Denmark's oldest medieval cities, as its charter dating from 1288 demonstrates. The town grew up around the market square and the natural port at the mouth of the river. In the 16C Køge became a prosperous market town thanks to trade with the Baltic countries. Today it is a charming and cheerfully bustling little town on market days. Admire the 16C and 17C houses (at no 20, the oldest) on Kirkestræde and visit the 14C church, Skt Nicolai Kirke.
