Sorø
The Essential
A quiet, rural market town occupying a pleasant site between two lakes surrounded by forests, Sorø was an important religious centre during the Middle Ages. A Cistercian monastery was founded here around 1160, very probably by Bishop Absalon. During the Reformation, the monastery was closed and transformed into a school until the day in 1623 when Christian IV decided to create an academy for young aristocrats. This institution, the Sorø Academy, still exists today, although it had to be rebuilt after it burned down.
