The Essential
This picturesque coastal town is one of the few in Finland never to have been destroyed by fire. Founded as Kristinestad in 1649 by Swedish governor Per Brahe, it was named after Queen Kristina of Sweden. It is an important commercial and services hub for the coast's Swedish-speaking communities. Furthermore, the town is a member of the Cittaslow Network, which aims to improve the quality of life in towns by slowing down the pace.
