At the foot of the Vosges mountains and the gateway into Lorraine, Saverne has benefited from its prime strategic position since the earliest days. A major town in Antiquity, it later became a rich episcopal seat under the control of the prince-bishops of the Fürstenberg and Rohan dynasties. Don't miss Rohan palace and its beautiful façade, the old houses, among which the half-timbered Katz and the Mitterspach (1569) houses or the ingenious St-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane, a sort of lift for boats that allows them to cross the canals.
