When to go
It is a real delight to travel through the towns and countryside of Alsace in spring. The sky is mostly bright, the temperatures mild and this season is the driest of the year.
Your plans will change if you holiday here in summer, when extremely high temperatures and frequent storms are to be expected. Think more swimming in lakes and walking in wooded areas.
Those who opt to travel along the Route des Vins in autumn will appreciate the dramatic colours of the vineyards and forests (in spite of the fairly frequent fog and mist) and the spectacle of the grape harvest.
Finally we turn to winter: even if it is long, harsh and often snowy, it will appeal to those looking to experience the Christmas markets, which you can find in most towns and some villages. Celebrations get going on 6 December, with festivities in honour of St Nicholas. You can also try out the many regional carnivals celebrating the end of winter (in February).
