Arenas of Périgueux
This elliptical amphitheatre was built in the 1st C and was one of the largest of its kind in Gaul. Enormous blocks of stone show the sheer mass of the vomitoria, staircases and vaults, but all the lower part remains buried in the ground. Made into a bastion and then a quarry for the town constructions, the amphitheatre is today a pleasant public garden.
